MARK instruments took part in the expedition of Russian Geographical Society to the Onega Peninsula.
09 декабря 2021
In 2021 on the Onega Peninsula within the frames of the grant of Russian-wide non-commercial association "Russian Geographical Society" "The White Sea - is the gateway to the Arctic. Puzzles of feathered migrants" a series of expeditions was performed in order to study the migratory flows of aquatic and semi-aquatic birds.

A flying "corridor" crosses the Onega Peninsula - numerous flocks of aquatic migrant birds stop on the shores of the White Sea to feed and seek shelter from the wind and predators. In the course of the expedition, Russian academy of Sciences researchers studied nutritive base of migrant birds at stopover resting places, and also took hydrochemical measurements in the Onega Bay, the Unskaya Bay and adjacent rivers and lakes mouths.

To do hydrologic-hydrochemical research - salinity, pH and oxygen content measurements – the scientists used MARK instruments, manufactured by "VZOR" LLC. DO-meter MARK-303 was applied to measure temperature, oxygen concentration and oxygen saturation in water, conductivity meter MARK-603 was applied to control total mineralization and salinity, hydrogen index (pH) was monitored with the pH-meter MARK-903. Totally 81 samples were taken as a part of the scientific expedition to measure the above indicators at various points of the Onega coastal area, which enabled the scientists to get a broad picture of the aquatic environment state of the region.

According to Russian Geographical Society specialists, the results of the expeditions will contribute a lot to the European North nature protection, as well as environmental and educational projects and tourism development. Traditionally, within the frames of such research, rare and endangered species of plants and animals are revealed, and new discoveries contribute to further development of fundamental science and its practical application for nature protection on the peninsula.
